pauraque: Picard reads a book while vacationing on Risa (st picard reads)
[personal profile] pauraque
In this first book of a hard SF trilogy, nanomaterials expert Wang Miao is recruited to help investigate the suicides of several prominent scientists. His inquiries lead him to a strange VR video game called Three Body, in which the player is challenged to solve the mystery of why the game's simulated world keeps falling victim to unpredictable changes in climate that cause its civilizations to inevitably collapse. Interwoven with the book's near-future narrative is a story of the past, in which an astrophysicist who lost everything in Mao's Cultural Revolution is assigned to a secret military base that she comes to realize is dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life. These two seemingly unrelated threads come together to reveal a multilayered conspiracy of world-ending stakes.

I had this on my TBR list for so long that I'd completely forgotten what it was about, and I think that worked out well for my experience of it. I never knew where it was going to go next, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Liu has a flair for creating epic set pieces of jaw-dropping cinematic scope that nonetheless follow naturally from the speculative science. I consumed a lot of popular science media in the 2000s, specifically, so for me the science in this book felt... oddly nostalgic? Not that it's obsolete, necessarily, but the particular preoccupations of that era and what was cutting-edge are strongly represented here. It made me want to go read a Brian Greene book.

The translation by Ken Liu reads nicely and I appreciated the informative but not excessive footnotes helping with some points about Chinese culture and history. I love that they let him write an afterword about the translation process!

The book is definitely more interested in ideas than people, and it's particularly weak on female characters. I was not entirely surprised to hear that the Netflix adaptation makes some of the male characters women, including Wang Miao. (I guess it also changes the nationality of a lot of characters, which makes less sense to me since the Chinese setting seems crucial to the book's themes, but I haven't actually watched the adaptation so it's not for me to say how well it works.)

I do plan to continue with the trilogy, though I have a suspicion that it might turn out to be too pessimistic in its outlook on the future for my taste? But I guess it depends on where the story ends up. My library hold on the second book just came in.

Vigilantes: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals (8/10)

Vigilantes is a spin-off story set before the events of Boku no Hero Academia which focuses on vigilantes in a world where being a pro hero is a viable career path. It expands the worldbuilding of BnHA beyond pro heroes and gives more historical information about how society developed after the appearance of Quirks. (Someone in YouTube comments said that Vigilantes is actually more academic about hero society history than BnHA which is more "My Hero Military Camp" sometimes. Absolutely wild and yet weirdly accurate.)

We're introduced to a new set of characters—college student Haimawari Kouichi, "freelance idol" Pop☆Step, and eccentric bruiser Knuckleduster—but lots of pro heroes from the main series appear in supporting roles as well.

Cut for length and spoilers (for the anime and some of the manga). )

Random stuff:

  • There's a distinct lack of protecting secret identities in this show. Kouichi spends more than half the time with his face out in the open even if they explicitly say that vigilantes are technically on the wrong side of the law. (Because even if they're doing good, they're not licensed.)
  • There's a trio of characters who are assholes to Kouichi and Kazuho in E01. Like, assault and beat up levels of being assholes. And yet there's some weird redemption thing going for them by the end of the season? We don't need this.
  • We get a fair share of Tensei AKA Big Iida in this show and I'm eternally grateful for it. We even get a minute of kid!Tenya struggling with his Quirk!! Cutie!!!
  • The animation quality's much more consistent compared to the recent seasons of the main show, and also just higher quality in general. Which is interesting because you'd think that the main series would get more love since it's the central canon. Checking on MyAnimeList, studio Bones produces the main series and Bones Film produces Vigilantes. Poking around the Wikipedia page, it looks like Bones Film is a subsidiary of Bones and different studios in Bones Film work on each series (Studio B for Vigilantes and Studio C for the main BnHA).
  • My per-episode reactions are in the comments of the corresponding posts over at [community profile] bnha_fans. Spoilers abound in the comment discussions, so beware if you check them out.
  • S02 is targeted for release in 2026!

I apparently haven't posted since Sunday. 🖖 Hi 🌞
I started watching 12 and Clara and then paused to ponder how Clara is immediately the person I remember and am vaguely annoyed by, and it seemed rather abrupt to me this time.
Some of it is her reaction to the regeneration. It does not make her more likeable, or more relatable to the long time Doctor Who viewer, in theory. But I actually had some problems with this regeneration at the time for unreasonable reasons, since Children of Earth was not fun. So it is a bit interesting watching my own reactions there.
I think the bit about Clara's ego is... new. New? Felt new. And not improved.
But her changing actually makes sense after the whole Impossible Girl thing.
But part of the Impossible Girl thing is how impossible it is for it to have happened any more? So *big shrugs*.
And I'm not sure how new she is vs how different the situation is. The job is a progression, the confidence suits, what is feeling new?
I also think the romance is... for one, not my sort of thing, but for another, not seeming at all romantic to me? Interesting story, sure, the Doctor parallels and the soldier stuff and the tangled up times and everything, certainly a lot of story is going on there. But I don't get why they like each other or are acting that way so. *small shrug*

I have watched up through Listen and I am more interested than I remember being the first time.

But then I picked up the headphones again and have listened to 7 and Mel adventures from Big Finish.

Bang Bang a Boom is not my thing.

Fires of Vulcan is interesting twists amid a lot of Romans I didn't much like listening to. But part of the point is their values don't mesh well with ours so the audio did what it set out to do. So, good, but not always fun.

Flip Flop lost my sympathy by making the bad guys a bunch of blind beings who enslave people to be their guide and who get their own way by complaining anyone disagreeing with them is a hate crime. They call themselves a minority and when it is pointed out they have 90% of the planet they say something like numbers aren't much to do with being a minority. In short this story did not feel like it was punching up, and I did not want much to do with it. I relistened it on fast forward. The alternating structure was a bit interesting in theory but does appear to leave us with two of the Doctor and Mel leaving the planet for further adventures, so I am not quite convinced. The specifics of the story didn't seem to be worth the elaborate setup. Didn't like it.

Unregenerate was one I put off listening to because its stated setting of run down asylum but evil doesn't really have a good side or good options. The story starting with someone doing the classic deal with the devil visit and then coming back on the last day of their deal recipients life to take them to the asylum? Pretty classic as horror set ups go, but, I do not want horror set up asylums. Honestly, neither mental illness nor mental healthcare need making scary. But Mel was quite emphatic about countering some prejudiced statements from a character of the week, so that bit was as good as it is getting I guess. Once the specifics of the alien experiment got made clear it was pretty interesting, Read more... ) So I'll just cut tag it so it can remain a mystery if anyone wants to listen to an audio from 2005.
I liked a lot of bits of it but the evil asylum spin loses it a star.

Last of the Titans isn't something I remember listening to before. 7 on his own, meets a nice seeming new sapient who pilots a planet eating ship. ... I don't actually remember how this ended but the options were all sad. Okay so I listened the end again. Big kabooming. Well that's a bad ending for a young being. I never like that, it's another case of inventing a mentally ill person to blow them up.

Robophobia at least had the mentally ill person survive the story.
I didn't much like how the Doctor communicated in this, yelling about people having to listen to him isn't the useful bit of the communicate, he should have led with the urgent words. Mysterious and manipulative only excuses him so far.
The Doctor, traveling alone, meets Liv Chenka, who is interesting enough already.
I like how the story arc goes through how everyone gets scared and then swings them back. Who they blame always makes enough sense.
And I liked the robots.
I feel like it's unlikely there's no course in an entire solar system except the self sacrificing one but as a story beat yeah alright.

Clicking through those adventures reminded me of the thing in the Big Finish app where you cannot seperately unload the interviews and music. If they filed all those bits under bonus you could save so much space. They are nice extras and I always like listening to new chatty bits, especially after the scarier stories, but I wouldn't carry them all around in my phone at all times when I could be carrying more main stories.

My week had a bunch of story in but doesn't feel like it had much week. It's the sleeping backwards but getting woken up a lot, it makes it all feel blurry. Still, pretty okay. 🤞

Untitled Daisuke and Monty by Julia Stark
Fandom: Dimension 20: Cloudward, Ho!
Relationship: Daisuke Bucklesby/Monty LaMontgomery
Medium: Art
Length: 1 piece
Rating: SFW
My Bookmark Tags: slice of life, happy ending, established relationship, then and now, clothing, nostalgia

Description:
Two full-colour images of Daisuke and Monty, one in the present and one in flashback to their younger days. The first is fully saturated and features the two walking close together with Monty in the lead. Daisuke's hat is tipped forward over his eyes as he looks down with a faint smile and puts away his flask. Monty is watching him over his shoulder, likewise smiling and seemingly mid-conversation with him. Above them, larger and more faded out, is a memory of them sitting together decades ago, Daisuke speaking while Monty watches him with soft-eyed attention.

Very Minor Spoilers for Episode 6 )
This piece is just so sweet. The whole "getting the band back together" element of Cloudward, Ho! has been right up my alley, and I like that their separation was more about losing something that was holding them together rather than a big falling-out that created any ill will. It's made for a great story so far about some highly competent older characters reuniting warmly with old friends and working well together because of their shared history.

I love how the artist has captured this. The flashback looms large over the two men, creating a sense of those past conversations fuelling their present ease with each other and shared direction. It spot-on conveys Monty's wonderful attentiveness to people and suggests a lot in imagining the usually laconic Daisuke so engaged in talking to him. As someone who loves the aesthetics of this season, I'm also very much here for the details in their outfits and the little ways they've changed over the years.

With my second load of ordered danmei arriving,1 I came to the bizarre realization that after so many years I’m…buying books with the intention of…reading them? What a paradigm shift!

This isn’t quite 100% accurate, but through my life I was first in the stage of borrowing books from the library and then buying them to keep if I really liked them, then a lot of ebooks, never mind my massive fic reading numbers, and all throughout I’ve also had a strong general practice of buying select books to have for whatever reason, often with not much intention of reading them, at least not anytime soon.2

I do have rules! I’m only “allowed” to collect things that fall within certain parameters, though some of the new ones (danmei, light novels that are horror/certain others) are a bit loose and will need to be tightened up eventually. I don’t have enough space for an infinity of books. I also generally buy ebooks if I can get them DRM-free, and after that, depending on the title, I may go for an audiobook instead if it exists.)

1 These aren’t “large” publishers like 7seas that I can get via my local bookstore but rather Rosmei & Via Lactea etc. and are physical-only (somewhat limited run?) publications.
2 i.e. I somehow randomly decided to start collecting C. J. Cherryh’s sci-fi books in hardcover, and now I’m too far in.

I finished The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom over the holiday weekend. I enjoyed it! I lost patience and didn't stick with the Sleep Dojo through the last two "sleep trainings" that I was struggling with to earn the outfit it rewards, and I never got the second available bonus outfit from my one amiibo, so I didn't 100% the game, but I think that I experienced all the possible story bits, which is of course what I want, so that's fine. Throughout the game, I enjoyed that there were so many different ways to solve challenges; there are almost zero obstacles with only one right solution, which was fantastic for me.

There's not a lot to say about the ending that isn't very well known by now... Spoilers... Link slashing an opening into the very hide of the Cthulu-like beast that is Null is cool. Null's heartbeat is cool. I loved Zelda and Link working together at the end to defeat Null, her bind plus his sword, and would genuinely have enjoyed a few more puzzles along those lines! I appreciated Tri's departure. The lore is intriguing and amorphous, and of course the official timeline placement was nailed down months ago.

Finally seeing the end credits straight through, I happily learned that all the characters visibly affected by the rifts are shown as recovered after the destruction of the rifts. The comatose Hylian boy, the listless Gerudo woman... yay! I also saw that all the might crystals are gone and Link's weapons have reverted to their pre-enhanced forms, there with Link and Lueburry fussing over them near Lueburry's machine. (Though the Tri Rod is still there in Zelda's room.) And electroapples are the new Deku Scrub hot trend, plunging the Business Scrubs into commerce chaos. Yet, as far as I can tell, the Deku Scrub in the southeast corner is still lonely... I didn't find any side-quest or credits moment to bring that Scrub a visitor (other than Zelda). Hmmm.

What are your thoughts and feelings about Echoes of Wisdom...?

Thank you to all our pinch hitters. <3 Remember that anyone who isn't signed up but is only pinch hitting can leave prompts at our treats for pinch hitters post! This is a great place to look if you're interested in creating treats.

Ideally, these would be due 18 July at 23:59 US Eastern time, one day before our planned reveals date. However, it's possible I'll have to delay the collection opening to make sure all participants are covered, so if you know you can take one of these pinch hits but will need longer than the 18th, please let me know, and we can discuss.

A delay looks likely at this time, and I'll make an announcement about that tomorrow.

If you can claim one of these, please comment with your AO3 name and the number of the pinch hit you want. All comments are screened.

Journaling prompt: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?
Creative prompt: Draw art of or make graphics of summer foods, or post your favorite summer recipes.
When I was growing up, the most coveted summer treat was universally acknowledged to be the It's-It. This is an ice cream sandwich made with soft oatmeal cookies, coated in a thin layer of chocolate. It was invented in San Francisco in 1928 and for decades it was sold only at the local amusement park Playland at the Beach. The Playland era was before my time, though; now It's-Its are sold prepackaged in stores and from roving food trucks all over the Bay Area.

I didn't realize until I moved away that It's-Its are made by a local company and nobody outside California had heard of them. I also didn't realize what a weird name they have until I tried to explain to other people what they were. "Itsits? What does that even mean?" I guess it made sense in the context of the 1920s when everyone was talking about "it girls" and having "it." (The movie It starring Clara Bow sounds like a horror title now, but it didn't in 1927!)

As a kid I never questioned it. The origin of the name did not matter. All that mattered was sitting on a sunny park bench after waiting patiently in line at the food truck, and finally biting into your precious It's-It, which instantly started melting, and trying to contain the ice cream in the flimsy crinkly plastic but always failing, having it drip all over your hands as it squeezed out from between the cookies with the chocolate coating cracking into melty bits. Pure summer childhood bliss.

You can actually order It's-Its online if you're in the US, and I've read that in recent years they've been selling them at brick and mortar stores outside California, though I haven't run into any in the wild. I've been told that they're pretty good even if the mere sight of them does not overwhelm you with nostalgia.
